Tavira town

This beautiful ancient town, full of charming Algarve character, is an attractive destination for golf holidays due to the amazing number of top quality golf resorts that surround the town. Tavira sits in the south east of the Portugal near the Spanish border and is divided into two parts by the River Gilao that is spanned by a beautiful arched Roman bridge. Known as the town of churches its 37 religious houses proudly dominate the cultural center.

The winding streets, picturesque buildings, and an enticing main square and riverside, lined with good restaurants are just some of the reasons why this resort is so popular with golf holiday makers.  The town’s beach is hugely popular with families and sun-seekers with lots of space for sports. The beach lies past the salt pans and is reached by a ferryboat that takes the holiday visitor to the long attractive sandy island known as Ilha de Tavira.

Golf courses and clubs are a fairly recent addition to tourism here and have risen quickly in popularity.  The first golf course in Tavira, Benamor, designed by Sir Henry Cotton, was officially inaugurated in 2000 and the nearby spectacular Monte Rei resort is one most prestigious golf destinations in Portugal. Located in the unspoilt countryside between the dramatic Serra do Caldeirão mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Monte Rei is a rare jewel and offers an outstanding golf experience in sumptuous surroundings.

Being located only 35 minutes from Faro airport, Tavira is incredibly convenient for those needing a quick and easy golf getaway and is popular with all age groups.
